About Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate
Cupric Sulfate Pentahydrate is an inorganic salt consists of large bright blue crystals that is highly soluble in water. The copper ion is the component of copper sulfate with therapeutic and toxicological implications. These dual key properties endow copper its great potential for two distinct applications as supplements and antimicrobials.
Copper is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in different physiological normal processes in all human tissues. It is involved in erythropoiesis and leukopoiesis, bone mineralization, elastin and collagen cross-linking, oxidative phosphorylation, catecholamine metabolism, melanin formation and antioxidant protection of cells. Hence, to keep normal copper homeostasis, a daily intake of copper for human adults has been set at 900 µg/day.
Cupric sulfate is used as an intravenous copper supplement for Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). Several tablets, capsules, injections and solutions made of cupric sulfate pentahydrate are available in the market as mixture products with other trace elements and vitamins.
It is used also as an animal nutritional supplement in veterinary.
Another interesting characteristic of cupric sulfate pentahydrate is the ability to kill microorganisms and mollusks. Copper (II) ions appear to bind to functional groups of protein molecules in bacteria, fungi and algae lead to protein denaturation, producing cell damage and leakage. So, it is used broadly for agricultural purposes, as a pesticide, germicide, feed additive, and soil additive.
Some of its other industrial applications such as textiles, leather, wood, batteries, ink, petroleum, paint, and metal has been reported, too.
