About Bismuth Potassium Citrate
Bismuth Potassium Citrate is an organo-metallic compound consist of bismuth, potassium and citrate in a molar ratio of about 1:5:2. It contains about 25.6% (mass percent) bismuth, which is the active moiety, and 22.9% potassium.
Today this salt of bismuth is sold to industries that require non-aqueous solubility like recent solar energy and water treatment.
Bismuth potassium citrate is a colloidal medicine prescribed for the treatment of inflammatory and erosive-ulcerous diseases of gastric and duodenal mucosa like peptic ulcer, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum, functional non-ulcerous dyspepsia, erosive duodenitis, post-operative inflammatory and erosive changes– anastomositis.
This effective compound plays its therapeutic role via several mechanisms; (1) Acid-neutralizing effect (2) Peptic activity inhibition (3) Increasing mucus glycoprotein secretion (4) Binding to the gastric mucus layer to act as a diffusion barrier to HCl (5) Ulcer healing by accumulation of epidermal growth factor around the ulcer (6) Cytoprotective effect by increasing mucosal secretion of prostaglandins and bicarbonate (7) Bactericidal effects against Helicobacter pylori (8) Preventing adhesion of H. pylori to epithelial cells (9) Inhibiting enzymes secreted by H. pylori, such as proteases, lipases, glycosidases, and phospholipases.
Generally speaking, bismuth potassium citrate is slightly soluble, absorbed in humans, and directly toxic to H. pylori within triple therapy.
